Most of you probably received it. We have been trying to perfect our e-mail list, since there were some returned because of wrong e-mail address. Thus, the delay between September and March. Also, I find that I need a lot of help on this website business, and that all Website Designers are not what I had anticipated they would be. Hopefully that is all in the past, and things will go more smoothly in the future. We will repeat several paragraphs from the first Newsletter, just in case you are one that was not on that list. Also, the Newsletter is on our website: http://www.goninangathering.com The Third Goninan Gathering will be on June 26, 27, 28 of 2009 in the United States, in the state of Wisconsin. We will base the Gathering at the Marriott West Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin. Many airlines fly in and out of Madison and transportation to and from the airport is complimentary by Marriott. There are also buses to Madison that you can make arrangements for if you fly into Chicago. We have chosen these dates in June so that if you are interested in staying in the United States during the following week, you can attend the July 4 Independence Day Celebrations. It is always a big holiday. We will be sending these Newsletters by e-mail. If you or another Goninan descendant does not have e-mail, we will send one by snail mail. We have an address for those in the U.S., those in the U.K., and those in Australia/Tasmania. They are: U.S.: Joan Hollis, 12709 Folly Quarter Rd., Elliott City, MD 21042 e-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:hollisje@comcast.net" hollisje@comcast.net U.K.: John Saunders, 45 Lanmoor Est., Lanner, Redruth, Cornwall, TR16 6HN e-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:jcsaunders@tesco.net" jcsaunders@tesco.net Aust/Tasm: Dot & John Beswick, e-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:johnanddotb@bigpond.com" johnanddotb@bigpond.com Please contact the one in your country. This will cut down on postage expense. Thanks! In this Newsletter, we are going to include a copy of the 1841 Census of Cornwall. Please spend time looking for your ancestors, and further expand your line. Then, send me a copy at: HYPERLINK "mailto:goninangathering@aol.com" goninangathering@aol.com This will be very helpful in being sure that the ancestral pedigree charts at the Gathering are as accurate as possible. Again! Thank you! In the new format on the Goninan website there is not a form to fill out with your plans to, or not to attend the 2009 Gathering, and the number possibly attending.. If you would just let me know your tentative plans, it would be helpful in reserving a block of hotel rooms. Again: HYPERLINK "mailto:goninangathering@aol.com" goninangathering@aol.com The accepted spelling in Cornwall became GONINAN. I will use that spelling in these Newsletters, as we are all originally descendants of the Cornish Goninans. As most of you know, the real Historian in the Goninan family is John Saunders! Without John, none of the Gatherings would be happening, and we would not know nearly as much about the Goninan family! I thank my lucky stars every day for John. He has now put together some photos on his web site. A photographic tour of West Cornwall (our ancestral home is where John lives). There will be more pictures on the web site as John travels around and takes them. Please find his web site address: HYPERLINK "http://www.lanner.fsnet.co.uk/photo.htm" http://www.lanner.fsnet.co.uk/photo.htm The historical additions to The Goninan Gathering Newsletters have been researched by John. We all THANK YOU John!!!! Dont forget to Spot YOUR Ancestor and send me your ancestral sheet! Sincerely, Janet Sipes (coordinator of planning for 2009) 22 Webster Heights Dr. Green Bay, WI 54301 HYPERLINK "mailto:Goninangathering@aol.com" Goninangathering@aol.com The 1841 Census (Cornwall) Spot your ancestor The 1841 Census was the first comprehensive census undertaken in the UK. It is by household and shows the Parish and the place within the Parish where people are living. It identifies the head of the household and the relationship of other occupants to that head. The ages given must be treated with care as they were rounded to the nearest five years. OccupatiCompObjqWordDocument4FSummaryInformation( DocumentSummaryInformation8 FMicrosoft Office Word Document MSWordDocWord.Document.89q%F\Object F4rMicrosoft Office Word DocumentC:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\March 2007 Newsletter.doc#3Rich Text Formatons are shown for adult males. Place of birth was only recorded by County. All our family members were born in Cornwall. By 1841 the family had spread out from Breage and can be found in various Parishes in West Cornwall. Four main family groups can be identified and for convenience we have always referred to these as the Gwithian, Helston, St Just and Perranuthnoe Branches and the Census details have been arranged by these family branches. The Gwithian Branch are the descendants of Richard and Mary Goninan (see ref 1 below for Mary). In 1841 they are all living in Gwithian Parish and the adjacent Gwinear Parish (other than one member who is lodging in St Just) The Helston Branch are the descendants of Edward and Honour Goninan (ref 11) and in 1841 they are living in Helston and one of their sons is lodging in Breage The St Just Branch are the descendants of William and Elizabeth Goninan (see ref 16 for William). In 1841 most are living in St Just but William himself is in Penzance The Perranuthnoe Branch are the descendants of Richard and Grace Goninan via their sons Richard and Henry. In 1841 family members are living in Perranuthnoe and the nearby Parishes of Sithney and Phillack The 1841 Census is an important document for the family because at this point, as far as we know, no one has yet emigrated and this concentration of family members in West Cornwall is in part what binds us all together. Wherever you are in the world now, you should be able to find one or more ancestors in this list. Can you spot yours please let us know if you can and tell us how your family tree maps out from 1841 up to the present day (for publication in a future newsletter). If you are not sure which are your ancestors let us know as we might be able to help The national census was undertaken every ten years. The data is confidential until a hundred years have elapsed. Thus the latest available census is for 1901. Some census information for Cornwall is available on line for free see HYPERLINK "http://freecen.rootsweb.com/" http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ We will show the data from the 1851 census in a later newsletter 1841 Census Cornwall The original census record has a multitude of different spellings for the surname of Goninan for convenience just the one spelling has been used here. Most of you probably received it. We have been trying to perfect our e-mail list, since there were some returned because of wrong e-mail address. Thus, the delay between September and March. Also, I find that I need a lot of help on this website business, and that all \'93Website Designers\'94 are not what I had anticipated they would be. Hopefully that is all in the past, and things will go more smoothly in the future. \par \par We will repeat several paragraphs from the first Newsletter, just in case you are one that was not on that list. There are also buses to Madison that you can make arrangements for if you fly into Chicago. It is always a big holiday. \par \par We will be sending these Newsletters by e-mail. If you or another Goninan descendant does not have e-mail, we will send one by snail mail. It is by household and shows t he Parish and the place within the Parish where people are living. It identifies the head of the household and the relationship of other occupants to that head. The ages given must be treated with care as they were rounded to the nearest five years. Occup ations are shown for adult males. Place of birth was only recorded by County. All our family members were born in Cornwall. \par \par By 1841 the family had spread out from Breage and can be found in various Parishes in West Cornwall. Four main family groups can be identified and for convenience we have always referred to these as the Gwithian, Helston, St Just and Perranuthnoe Branches and the Census details have been arranged by these family branches. \par \par \par The Gwithian Branch are the descendants of Richard and Mary Goninan (see ref 1 below for Mary). In 1841 family members are living in Perranuthnoe and the nearby Parishes of Sithney and Phillack \par \par The 1841 Census is an important document for the family because at th is point, as far as we know, no one has yet emigrated and this concentration of family members in West Cornwall is in part what binds us all together.
